I. How it start
It isn’t hard to guess where someone from FPT University will work after graduating, it’s almost like part of the graduation ceremony is signing the job contract. Like many before me, I was “lovingly kidnapped” by FPT University straight into their workforce. FPT Software.
I started my first day at FPT as a Developer Level 1+, working for one of the biggest insurance companies in Vietnam at the time. My department was an ODC (Offshore Development Center), so I worked much like a member of the client’s in-house team rather than just an outsource developer.
2. The Beginning
In my first two years, I focused on taking my Front-End skills to the next level by joining various projects to sharpen my technical expertise (NextJS, Redux Saga, React-Native, Scrum master Cert, Ant Design, Micro Front end, Front End SDK, CICD, etc). I also obtained different certifications, which really paid off, after just over a year, I was promoted to Team Leader of the project.
3. More skills - More opportunities
After honing my Front-End skills to a professional level and building solid management abilities, I realized that in order to keep growing and surviving in this industry, that alone wasn’t enough. So, I expanded my tech, picking up more skills such as Flutter, AWS Cloud Development, NodeJS, and React Native etc. I also gained new teaching skills when I opened a class and became an instructor for the program.
With these extra tools under my belt, I was trusted to join side projects and pitch to both local and international clients, bringing multiple projects back to the company. That might have been why I was promoted to Senior Front-End earlier than expected and even took home the “Best Performer of the Year” award.
My last project at FPT was a group of websites built on AWS infrastructure to sell services (similar to Supabase), where I worked as the Team Leader (1 leader from Ho Chi Minh City, 4 members from Hanoi). It was a large project with a tight timeline, and I completely lost my work-life balance during it.
4. Time to say Goodbye.
If you’re reading this, you might be wondering why I left such a “perfect” company. Well, everything has two sides. During my time there, I learned a lot, picked up valuable skills, and had countless opportunities to improve myself. I also made great memories, I often organized trips and even moonlighted as the team’s professional singer and dancer (haha).
But here’s the flip side: I often worked overtime because projects were always planned with tight timelines to meet customer expectations. To be honest, the salary was good, but not quite enough to truly satisfy me. The overtime pay system didn’t help either.
I don’t mind working overtime, but it cost me my work-life balance. Sometimes I had to work late 3–4 days a week for an entire month just to hit deadlines. That meant no time for my family, and the pay still wasn’t enough to support my lifestyle. or feed my cat properly haha. So, I decided to move on, and keep this “perfect” company safely stored away in my memory box.
If anyone asks me whether FPT Software is a good workplace, I will say yes. It is a place where you can learn, improve yourself, work with overseas clients, and grow into a professional developer
